Set in 1925 during the birth of the National Football League, the story is about pro football team captain Dodge Connolly, played by Clooney, who loyally stands by his team (the Duluth Eskimos) after their sponsor backs out. In his attempts to promote the team to all star rank, he enlists Carter Rutherford, a war time hero and a college football superstar nicknamed the Blond Bullet, to his team.

With his talent, heroic war time status, and appealing looks, Carter Rutherford is liked by everyone…almost. Enter Lexie Littleton, a sports journalist for the Chicago Tribune, who is determined to find out what he is hiding. She has been sent in by her editor to uncover the truth of Rutherford’s war time story, while pretending to write a fluff piece on him.

As the story progresses, her role challenges Rutherford’s and Connolly’s relationships on and off the field. Littleton soon becomes the object of affections for Rutherford, but Littleton has got her own eyes set on Connolly. This has George Clooney’s character caught in a romantic triangle and things get even more tangled when Pete Harpen, the appointed Commissioner of Football, gets word of Littleton’s real plans.
