When you can live forever, what do you live for? Vampire Edward Cullen has waited almost 100 years for his soul mate. The only problem is, she is human.

Based on the book of the same name by Stephenie Meyer, Twilight tells the story of 17-year-old Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart, Jumper) who moves to the small town of Forks to live with her father, and falls in love with the mysterious Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix).

Twilight Overview

During her first day at Forks High School, Bella (Stewart) is immediately drawn to pale and beautiful Edward Cullen (Pattinson). When she sits next to him in Biology class, it seems clear that she repulses Edward, but in truth, he finds her irresistible, in more ways then one.

Although Edward tries to avoid Bella, he is also drawn to her and soon a dangerous romance begins and Bella discovers that her beau and his family are vampires. As the romance between Bella and Edward continues, it soon becomes clear just how dangerous the relationship is for Bella, and not just because of Edward or the rest of the Cullens.

Twilight Review

Fans of Meyers book will enjoy this film, finding it complimentary to the novel. It is romantic and suspenseful and while a little slow paced to begin with, picks up during the second half of the movie and becomes quite thrilling.

Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) and his father Billy, of the Native American Quileute tribe from nearby La Push, act as antagonists to their relationship, clearly disliking Edward and the Cullens. Jacob tells Bella old tribal stories about wolves and ‘cold ones’ which confirm her suspicions that Edward is a vampire.

As Bella and Edward struggle with their desires, clearly obsessed with each other, Edward refuses to give in to his natural instincts although her finds her intoxicating. He also refuses to ‘turn her’ and steal away her human life, despite her eagerness to become a permanent member of his family.

Edward calls himself a monster, but is constantly saving Bella from danger. When a coven of nomad vampires enters Forks, and upon seeing Bella with the Cullens, begins to track her for their next meal, it is up to the whole family to try and save this fragile human’s life.

Viewers expecting a vampire action or horror flick will be disappointed, however there is plenty of vampire action in the second half of the movie with great special effects in the fight scenes. The special effects where Edward is running or climbing trees lacked realism, but this doesn’t effect the enjoyment of the movie too much. The music score fits perfectly with the beautiful scenery of this film.

Both Stewart and Pattinson covert their roles well, as the helpless damsel and brooding hunk, as does the support cast. Twilight is an enjoyable movie, suspenseful, romantic, with humorous one-liners and full of emerging heartthrobs. One that should leave most viewers keen to see the next installment, which is due out in the U.S in November 2009.
