February 14th is fast approaching. Are you in the mood for love? You will be after snuggling up to watch one of these romantic, sexy movies.
Based on Truman Capote's novel, Audrey Hepburn's iconic performance as Holly Golightly earned her an Oscar nomination for Breakfast At Tiffany's. Holly is busy charming her way to gifts from wealthy admirers when she meets writer Paul Varjak (a young, handsome George Peppard). They click immediately, but both of them are financially 'kept' by other people. The two leads both exude charisma in this film which is light on plot, but full of nuance. The glimpses of the real Holly and Paul, visible when their facades momentarily slip, are what gives this film its romantic heart.
2. Amelie
Jean-Pierre Jeunet's whimsical French language film Amelie recalls the deftly crafted comic book worlds of his previous movies Delicatessen and The City Of Lost Children, but this time round employs a lighter, more romantic touch. Amelie determines to bring happiness to those around her by performing anonymous good deeds, but she is unable to find love herself. Audrey Tautou is outstanding in the title role, as is Matthieu Kassovitz, as her eventual love interest Nino. Do not be put off by the subtitles, Amelie is one of the most wonderful films imaginable, and is sure to put a smile on your face, and a spring in your step.
Another subtitled film, this time Italian, Il Postino (The Postman) is a joy to behold. A famous Chilean poet , Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret) is exiled on a small Italian island, where a local fisherman, Mario (Massimo Troisi), takes on the job of hand delivering his mail. Pablo befriends Mario, and imparts a new found appreciation of poetry, which Mario puts to good use wooing Beatrice, the beautiful waitress from the local cafe.
Powell and Pressburger's 1946 propaganda film stands the test of time thanks to its universal theme of love. David Niven plays a suave British WW2 pilot who's about to crash land in his damaged plane, but spends his last few moments chatting over the radio to an American RAF girl (Kim Hunter). Amazingly, he survives, and quickly falls in love with the girl behind the voice. Unfortunately, there's been a celestial mix up, and heaven want him back.
A clever modern twist on a fairytale, make no mistake, The Princess Bride is so much more than it appears at first glance. William Goldman's inventive script has swashbuckling heroes, action, adventure, comedy and, of course, true love.
The Tarantino scripted, Tony Scott directed antidote to romantic fluff, True Romance is a whirlwind ride with two young lovers on the run. A hugely enjoyable over the top romp, the mix of violence and romance may not be to everyone's taste, but for fans of action movies and high octane thrillers True Romance has to be Valentine's day movie of choice.
Never has a screen lit up with more sexual chemistry than it does between George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez in Out Of Sight. Respectively playing the bank robber and the cool cop on his tail, the film jumps about in time to reveal how love blossoms between this unlikely pair.
Juiette Binoche plays the beguiling chocolatier who arrives from nowhere and shakes up a stagnant small town with both her chocolate shop and her refreshing attitude to moral platitudes. Johnny Depp plays the free spirited drifter who matches her in every way. What's not to love?
The 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, starring Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo, is a sizzling, sexy affair. Mr Crown is an emotionally unfulfilled millionaire who steals priceless artworks for kicks, but it seems he's met his match in insurance investigator Catherine Banning. They begin a seductive game of cat and mouse, falling madly in love along the way, but Catherine is plagued with doubts over her playboy-thief lover. The Thomas Crown Affair does a magnificent job of keeping you guessing who's fooling who, all the way along.
Director Baz Luhrman brings an uncynical romanticism to the dark underground world of the Moulin Rouge. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman excel as the passionate lovers, and a sense of wonder abounds in this glorious technicolor musical.
